A Man accused of murdering his adopted 18-month-old daughter denied struggling to manage when wondered by using police.

Matthew Scully-Hicks, 31, of Delabole, Cornwall, denies murdering Elsie Scully-Hicks at their Cardiff residence.

A transcript of his police interview on 23 June 2016 used to be read to Cardiff Crown Court on Monday.

The jury has in the past been told he despatched texts to his husband pronouncing he was “struggling to cope” and describing Elsie as “Devil in a babygro”.

Elsie died of catastrophic injuries in the early hours of 29 Could 2016 at Cardiff’s College Clinic of Wales, two weeks after being formally adopted with the aid of Mr Scully-Hicks and his husband, Craig.

Elsie’s accidents had been “very conventional” of babies who’ve been shaken, the Courtroom has prior to now been informed.

There was additionally haemorrhaging within both of Elsie’s retinas – related to inflicted trauma or harm.

When police requested Mr Scully-Hicks in June 2016 about Elsie’s behaviour, he advised officers she used to be vocal in regards to the things she wished and would “whinge” for them.

“She did not are likely to scream or anything like that, it used to be a whinge or a cry,” he said.

When asked how he coped caring for Elsie, he stated: “I by no means felt like it was ingesting me the place I Assumed I might no longer cope.”
